This site is A1, and I've been trawling these pages for a few days and discovered so many incisive, witty and plain helpful comments: in short, a cool community.

With all this in mind, I thought I'd put a few queries down.

1. Is houseshare easy?. I'm a laid back, 30 something lawyer who's used to this.
2. Is it easy/inexpensive to travel to US/Cuba/anywhere
3. Is living on a boat cheaper/good idea.
4. Kinda 'concerned' about moving to new place with zero contacts: for a normal, friendly kinda guy, is it pretty easy to make friends and have a good time.
5. living costs are a concern. I've been offered $230k p.a. I appreciate this is probably fairly substantial by some standards (?!?) but what sort of lifestyle could I have and
could I say something.
6. Er....ladies: seem a bit thing on the ground. Is that really the case?
7.Kinda like the idea of living on a beach/close to it: how likely is that given costs.

Also, I may come out for an 'inspection visit': can anyone reccomend some great hotels/B&B's...

Big thanks!!!

Hey Manunited, welcome to the crazy farm...
Newbie Ks to you

Houseshares are usually pretty available but I'm guessing due to your job type you'll probably get a housing allowance so can afford a apartment of your own. It's not really expensive to travel to states but other places can add up. Living on a boat - no freaking clue. Don't think I know anyone who does that... I'm sure you will find contacts, Bermy is a very social place so if you get out, you'll be sure to find people. You can have a great lifestyle on that much and now I dislike you purely on a jealousy tip. Smiley I'm assuming you are asking if ladies are a big thing? Don't know what you are asking...

And close to beach living... that's the whole island Smiley

Welcome to BDA Manunited.

If you think Alsys "dislikes" you on that salary, I could "hate" for significantly less believe me.

Just kidding...Alsys is actually a VERY wealth young lady. Oh yes.....has her own liquor store too!

Sorry, Manunited, you appear to have caught us on a giggly post-holiday vibe.

No need to apologize alsys, it's lovely.   Smiley

Welcome to the forum Manunited.  Feel free to change your mind on the use of your name here, you are welcome to be anonymous too if you wish.

I hope you make sense of the answers to your questions.  As Uncle Elvis says, "you'll do JUST fine down here, amigo!" Note his emphasis on just.  He's clever like that, keep a sharp eye on him!

A good friend of mine worked in Bermuda for one of the big law firms, she is a contract lawyer.  She thought she'd stay for just one year, as she is very close to her family in Vancouver.  Once they knew she was all that, they threw stupid money at her to stay.  Repeat a third year with her telling me with that look on her face I knew she was leaving.  She did, but one year became three very profitable years for her.

The boat in Bermuda is required to be in the big boys club, don't kid yourself on $230K yet.

"ladies: seem a bit thing on the ground" is something I don't understand... but if you are asking about the single women, of course they are out there!

Now seriously, you know the widest part of the Island is 1.5 miles right?   Everybody lives near the beach.

$130k is still a good salary.  You probably can find a decent place on your own with that salary which has a nice ocean view as well.

As for the ladies, well, there are quite a few nice single ones - you just have to know where to look for them.  My ex-pat coworkers seem to have no problems finding themselves girlfriends.  I wouldn't broadcast too much about the salary though - there are some gold-diggers out there.  The right lady will like you, no matter what you make.

Also, there are lots of Man U fans on this island so you should make friends no problem (I assume you are a Man U fan, based on your screen name).  Just go to the Robin Hood Pub and they'll be there watching the matches.

Trips overseas - well, when there is a seat sale (which is pretty often), you can get a ticket for around $300.  That's what I paid to go to Boston a few weeks ago for a long holiday weekend.  Tickets to the UK aren't as cheap.  However, if you time it right, you can get business class tickets for around US$2k return on British Airways.  I hear flying through the States is cheaper, but I hate flying so I try and get to my destination using as few airplanes as is possible.

If you want to come down for a scouting visit (which I HIGHLY recommend), the hotels are pricey (around $400/night).  If you want to see what island life is really like, you could do a vacation rental.  Go to the website www.bermudarentals.com and you should be able to find a reasonably-priced apartment to rent for the week.

Good luck!
