I am leaving the island and looking for some info regarding selling my car.  I have seen several ads where it appears that the individual selling their car is selling it with plates and the insurance coverage. Is this the norm for Bermuda and how does this work? Does the person just transfer the insurance to their own name or are they just driving around insured under my name? It doesn't seem logical and I am hoping someone can shed some light for me. I would expect to cancel the insurance when I sell it and get a portion of the premiums refunded.

Thanks

Hi Curious

To the best of my knowledge, you cannot transfer insurance. Best check is TCD; they are alot better these days believe me - lol.

When we sold our car we had to:
-find a buyer lol
-get the car transfer tested at tcd
-the buyer had to get all of their papers in order (i believe that is their own insurance and what not)
-and i think that at tcd you can have everything eventually transfered over to the buyers name, insurance, etc.

wow after reading that it seems that i haven't imparted a very good answer.  So i'll just go with Martin and say call TCD....first thing lol.

Thanks guys- I did call TCD today and was told that there is a box on the bill of sale that you can tick to transfer the remaining premiums over to the new owner or alternatively, leave the box unticked and get a refund from the insurance company. ( They actually did seem to be better to deal with, or more likely, they are just more accomodating when they know that you are leaving!)

Captain you are right about finding a buyer.  Looks like its going to be harder than I thought, Seems that a lot of people like to just make appointments and not bother to show up!

Good luck selling your car, make sure you put in your ad, no dreamers, timewasters, or tire kickers and if anyone emails requesting you contact them should you not get your price tell them to go to hell as well.

when we sold our remaining things (toaster, tables, tv, etc.) we had a LOT of people that came out of the woodwork to waste our time.  I mean it's like a small population in Bermuda wait for people to put out ads for them to respond to so that they can impose their foolishness on them.  Saying they'll come by and then the don't.  Asking just about the dumbest questions about the most simple of items.  So i know your frustration with respect to buyers.

Fortunately for us when it came to selling our car i had a co-worker (ironically the guy that was hired to replace me lol) that needed a car and well...the rest is history.

Good luck

You have to suffer the time wasters I'm afraid.

On the question of pricing - but only if you mean it - use the words "Price Firm". Also put "will sell on first come first served basis".

One way to stop 'late interest', is that when you have sold the article - go back into Emoo and ammend the Ad with the word SOLD. Don't just delete it.
