k.... so I have my job offer, it's been advertised locally and all that, and now apparently just have to wait for my employer to get my visa. Anyone got any idea on time frames as to how long this will take? Are there any bits of paperwork I should be applying for now to speed things up a bit?

cheers

If it's a temporary work permit you could have one within a few weeks.

If it's not temporary you could be looking at several months.

My first work permit took about 6 months to process.  When time for renewal came and we sent in the papers WELL in advance of the 6-8 weeks, which is the official amount of time to process papers, and the time came and went, I got nervous. We called the immigration office to ask what my options were, they said "keep working as normal till we tell you otherwise."  Well, 3 temp landing permits ($50 each) and 9 months later, i got my renewal papers.

But at any wednesday (the ONE day of the week they work on work permit papers, imagine my surprise when i found that out) i could've gotten the call to say that i was being denied.

Great system.  No proplem here.

Those example times are par for the course, I'm afraid.

I wonder whether Immigration doesn't realize how stressful it is for a guest worker to feel like they are in limbo during the interim processing period.  That "keep working" thing is the norm, but having been through it myself, I know very well how uncomfortable that time is.  It is the not knowing, when the mind starts to wander into the worst-case fears, that is really hard on a person.

My advice to you sharquis is to set your expectations for 6 months to a year.  I know that makes planning hell, but if you make all the preparations now, you will probably be chewing your nails for months waiting for the work permit (they don't call it a visa - in Bermuda that is your credit card!) for a long time.  If you've put your life on hold, that will be time wasted.  Enjoy the time, and keep in mind that the move will come... eventually.

There really isn't anything you can do to speed it up.  I'm sure you've got the medical form and x-ray ready.  You might want to get certified copies of your qualifications documents and it never hurts to get or update any reference letters - you might need them once you are on Island.

Otherwise, congrats and let us know how your preparation goes.   Smiley
