Bermuda woman sentenced in theft of premier's info

2009-07-04

HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — A hotel worker has received a suspended prison sentence for stealing the debit card information of Bermuda's premier and using it to buy pizza.

Kim Dean says she kept the number from a phone order at the Southampton Princess hotel, but she didn't know the card belonged to Premier Ewart Brown. The 20-year-old clerk pleaded guilty to using the number to purchase $50 worth of pizza in April.

A judge gave Dean a three-month suspended sentence on Friday, meaning she will not go to prison unless she commits another crime in the next two years.

Court documents say the crime came to light when Brown noticed unfamiliar transactions on his bank statement.

Brown spokesman Glenn Jones said the premier would not discuss the case.

I dunno, that sounds about right for a $50 theft to buy food.  Not exactly pilfering public coffers for a million bucks, is it?
