Water conservation can be done effectively

July 14, 2009

To The Editor:

It was good to read about something being done in the area of water conservation (“A city’s rainwater law may serve as model,” July 7 [2009-07-14 BLS: http://www.tennessean.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009907060348 ).

If they are looking for a model that has been in place for years, they should look to Bermuda. There are no streams and little groundwater but they don’t let rain escape to the sea from their roofs.

Every new building must have a cistern in the basement. It usually has the same dimensions as the building in area. All businesses or residences must have roofs that capture all the rainwater and run it into the basement pool. The roofs are white and have a high edge to keep rainwater from splashing over the top. It runs down to the pool.

Our Southwest has been plagued by floods periodically and they have regarded stormwater as a nuisance. This in one of the fastest growing parts of the country and basically desert land.

Their “experts” should take a trip to Bermuda, enjoy the sun and see how it is being done effectively.
