Maybe this was government's plan (and by government, I mean Brown)...there will be such economic crisis here during and after the mass exodus of IB that the states may have to step in and save the day and Annex Bermuda...didn't this happen with Hawaii way back when - something about an embargo on pineapples or something...

Take away a country's only viability, watch it fall to the ground in despair....

Given Dr Brown's Red White and Blue inclination, you might be on to something there Wiks.  Karma to you.

As for Silly Burch and the "International Plight of Migrant Workers" (WTF does that even mean?) - what a load of crap!

"For the most part I believe non-Bermudian workers are being treated fairly during their employment in Bermuda. However, one case of abuse of workers is too many and when reported will be fully investigated and addressed."

rofl

... by "addressed" he means the employer will be asked not to do it again.

There is no legislation protecting "migrant workers" so there is really nothing that can be done.

Let the idiots come and say we can sue a Bermudian employer in a Bermudian court (paying expensive Bermudian lawyers to do so)... come on say it... you have before.

Oh, I really love your sense of humor.  Grin
We had the same exact experience more than a year ago.
Me and some of my colleagues were simply got fired by the 'company' because the crisis and whatever.
The funny things was that the previous week in the company meeting they said that everything was fine ... Sure, it was fine for their wallets!  Cool
Just a short summary of what happened:
  • Bonus, forget about it ...
  • Notice? Yep but not that one mentioned in the contract ...
  • Reference and release letter? Only if you were able to say yes to everything, and I mean, everything ...
I didn't complain too much as I already had a better job but one of my friends, he just went to the human rights and he got a lawyer, and do you want to know what was the result?
He found another job here, but "for some strange reasons ..." the immigration didn't grant him a new work permit. A guy with a BA and 2 masters was not grant a work permit for 3 fu... years. Ridiculous ...

Everyone in this forum knows the 'adventure' of your girlfriend and her crappy employer but it's just a common 'template' here.
What I noticed is that BM is getting worst and worst and I will say again that without expats here there won't be anything like Insurance, Petrol company, dirty money companies and so on ... So no shops, no emoo, no crazy rent and ... I can continue for another hour ...
When will the 'smart' bermudians start to understand this??  dunce

They never will, even when you compare them to places like:

Jamaica
Barbados
Turks and Caicos

They think they are in the same league as the Caymans....but as far as I can tell, the Caymans don't treat everyone like the dirt under their shoe...

It doesn't matter now anyway. Once Obama passes whatever things he needs to pass in order to get the exempt companies to start paying taxes, they'll pick up and move - there's absolutely NO value in staying here without the tax break  --- and alot of them already have (very quietly I might add). Then there will be NOTHING here...no tourism, NOTHING.

I just laugh now at how they don't see the big picture in all this....40% of all air arrivals were for business and visiting ex-pat friends and family...I suspect it's more, but whatever, and Air Canada just announced that it has had to cancel Tuesday flights in March because of low ticket sales. This has nothing to do with West Jet coming here - they don't start until May!

The only people I feel bad for are my friends who have bought property here...when the economy goes belly up, they will be up sh*t creek and won't be able to pay off their million dollar mortgages!

Exactly right, my friend.  Speak out for your 'rights' and you have the right to leave.  Within 21 days... buh-bye!
