Ok, so at first my thoughts went towards: "why is this woman having a baby if she doesn't have a job?" and then I got a little mad because she's asking everyone else to pay for her medical bills....

But then I thought wow - I'm still proud to be a Canadian...why do you think they sent her and her baby directly to Sick Kids in Toronto - instead of Boston? Not only is Toronto Sick Kids a world renowned hospital, it is also a Canadian hospital, where we don't ask for insurance or payment up front....

I am wondering, however, if this woman does not have insurance, how is she affording all the plane fares and hotel stays?

You are such a Bermudaphobe!   Slap

Great point, Wiks... even if there is a huge bill, who pays for the soft costs?

These are normally picked up by insurance.

Only the most irresponsible person brings a child into the world that they cannot afford to keep and to give birth without having the child covered by insurance is truly moronic.

On the other hand I find it hard to understand that wealthy countries exist that don't provide healthcare or insurance coverage for it's children.  Bermuda may think itself fist world but is backwards on so many counts.

Sure, but in this case, I was wondering who paid?  As Wikigrl points out, she got on the plane and must have stayed somewhere.

Since society primarily worships the cult of consumerism now, shouldn't the dividing line between who lives and dies be measured by the ability to pay for medical services?  Even if that is in the form of insurance, let's say.  Are we still stuck in a limbo between all life being sacred and only those with the money to pay for the 'miracle' of modern treatment?

From the New York Times Health Guide, "The most expensive condition was hypoplastic left heart, in which most or all of the two left chambers is missing. Treatment cost about $200,000, on average."

In this woman's case, I wonder if it is those 'Bermudianophobia' suffering Canadians at the hospital in Toronto who are carrying the $350,000 bill while she has potluck lunch fund raisers?   Undecided

@ Frogleg: I totally agree with your point:

And on an island where people need to be air vac'd out for practically every single thing, the government's HIP coverage doesn't cut it in the least. there's is an additional fund for major medical stuff like this...so I am assuming this woman doesn't even have HIP coverage.

I'm going home where my butt and my my childrens' butts are/will be covered by our provincial plans and I will (*try to*) never complain about the high taxes that fund this and other social programs again.

Oh, and I know this is a ridiculous question, but where is this baby's father and his family in all this???!!!

They may not ask for payment up front but treatment will not be "free" at Sick Kids unless the person is Canadian and/or a landed immigrant and resident in Ontario. OHIP will be after them to pay. If you really want "free" fly to the UK. Not saying the quality is the same but it will be free regardless of your nationality.

I have written "free" in invetred commas of course because regardless of what Mcihael Moore may say nothing is "free" in health care.
