Actually, what Labour Minister David Burch said was, "Bermudians are being let go and guest workers are being kept on. It can't happen".

"I may have to take some decisions today... in regard to revoking work permits," he said.

No matter how much lazy deadwood is on the payroll, you have to get rid of the hard working foreign workers first.

"Why are we going round and round?  What's that sound?"

posturing as usual. While i was in bermuda I was told expats would be allocated cars and not everyone would be allowed to have one (Bermudians obviously would still be allowed). and that i would have an expat ID card to carry with me at all times.

Too true, Paget.

Burch loves to rattle his tin sabre, and IB knows it can plug on.

The irony of course, by reminding expats they are considered so much fodder for the mills, he has successfully undermined the efforts to establish Bermuda as a preferred offshore domicile.  What a moron!

I hope they are including all the doctors and nurses as well being fired first who is going to replace them? or they gonna have a fast ferry to boston with the sick n injured? all well and good saying expats go first but as alot of expats are in skilled jobs and no bermudians are available to replace them, or are not capable of replacing them. Still makes a person feel wanted. Next week burch be saying give up the weed otherwise you would all have jobs.

hahah... thanks for that kitty!

If I were to pick which politicians would be sharing a blunt with Ashfield, Burch would top that list.

... things are going to get even nastier now!

Parliamentary Answers revealed 'forners' are getting "overly generous compensation packages" as directors at Publicly owned Port Royal Golf Course.

Opposition Leader Kim Swan said, "What stands out in contrast is the salaries paid out for the seven mostly Bermudian management staff is $572,721 and the compensation for the two [expat] Directors total $414,663."

Headlining the RG article is the Uighurs salary expenditure, which is revealed as each being paid $51,600 a year -  as four of TWELVE groundskeepers.

With the massive contraction in the Bermuda economy, look for the already palpable resentment of foreign workers to skyrocket as the unemployed learn what impressive sums are being paid to foreign workers in government jobs.   Sad

Now, Burch is calling for a closed-door meeting with Bermudians to discuss expat worker term limits.

Shadow Labour Minister Michael Dunkley called the action "divisive and inflammatory", as if that's anything new.

Keep in mind the PLP introduced the 6 year term limits on work permits in 2001...  Huh

I am not going to open a new post for it as I see that we are talking about the same thing.
Did you read this morning article or RG: http://www.royalgazette.com/rg/Article/article.jsp?articleId=7da38b330030000&sectionId=60
This is simply ridiculous and racist 100%.
The most funny sentence is this one:
Quote
This is a private meeting for Bermudians only — no media — so that there can be an honest sharing of ideas. In this vein, proof of Bermudian status will be required.

Ah ah ... lol this is very funny, I am still thinking about the right way to translate that ...
Mike, Bermuda is getting really bad right now and I think that in few years we won't be able to have more than 1 year work permit.

You may be right about the decrease in work term limits.  Once all of IB high tails it off the island what's the use of expats then?

Dire situation a brewing....

HAHAHA - Burch complains he is annoyed at people’s “hypocrisy”!

I can't make any sense from this double-talk:

Senator Burch was asked when the 10 year ($20,000) work permits were likely to be issued. He replied: “I’m not issuing any.”

“I want people to be honest and then not to criticise what I say”, he is reported to have said.

I think you've summarized the real concern, number m.

Burch said: "I just wish someone would stand up and tell me what the real deal is."

Minister Burch, that is exactly what guest workers want too.

"Not one person in this country will stand up and be honest about term limits."

Yep, that's how we feel too.

Fire expats first, but what if you can't even hire any locals in the first place?

I guess is not worth getting out of bed for $55,000 when you can make more than that selling drugs.

Quote

The exam should be a grade 12 level test, equivalent to senior four (S4) in Bermuda's public school system, and suitable for a 17-year-old high school graduate.

"We have to maintain that level," said Mr. Hollinsid. "We need to have people with good academic abilities who are prepared to improve their academic credentials."

He said the majority of applicants were at a grade eight or middle three (M3) level i.e. that of a 13-year-old student.

The chief fire officer said it was not for him to criticise the Island's education system, but added: "What are we turning out? I have some concerns about that with respect to kids coming out of school who are not even able to pass the entrance test.

Bermuda is screwed
