First quarter stats from the Bermuda police show theft and burglary were down considerably.  During the same period, firearm and violent crime were at 10 year highs.  Me thinks there is a correlation!   Huh

I would like to know what the statistic is for burglary or an occupied dwelling- which is routine in the UK but relatively rare in the US, although a number of cases have been reported recently in my home city.

Maybe the burglars know something about the prevalence of firearms in Bermuda that the cops don't.

My theory on this would be that crime  is not down and that people have not been reporting this type of thing due to the other incidents!!! I mean when you know about all the shootings and murders are you going to think twice about reporting a minor crime? Like Mr X breaking in and eating your food and drinking your rum? especially when you left the doors all open and still think you live in paradise!!

The stats are pretty much meaningless, but there isn't much mistaking the trend in gun crime:

Firearms injuries and fatalities:

2004 - 0
2005 - 0
2006 - 5
2007 - 3
2008 - 1
2009 - 17
2010 - 10 in just three months!

But, don't worry, firearms officers are now carrying tasers...  blink

I kind of totally support the firearms officers carrying tasers. I really think they deserve something to protect themselves with. Do I think tasers were the BEST solution? No, because they are very dangerous and can be deadly if used imporperly - but - the officers absolutely need something to protect themselves!
